James Chadwick (1891 - 1974) was an English physicist best known for his discovery of the neutron in 1932, a breakthrough that transformed the understanding of the atomic nucleus and helped make nuclear fission conceivable. [1] A student and later close collaborator of Ernest Rutherford, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1935 and went on to direct the British contribution to the Manhattan Project during the Second World War. Early life and education

James Chadwick was born on 20 October 1891 in Bollington, Cheshire. He studied physics at the University of Manchester, where he came under the influence of Ernest Rutherford and began research into radioactivity. [1] After graduating he travelled to Berlin to work with Hans Geiger, but the outbreak of the First World War left him stranded in Germany, and he spent much of the conflict interned as an enemy alien at the Ruhleben camp near Berlin. Cambridge and the Cavendish Laboratory

Following the war Chadwick joined Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, where he became a fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Working alongside Rutherford, he investigated the structure of the atomic nucleus and the transmutation of elements, developing the precise experimental techniques that would define his later work. Discovery of the neutron

In 1932 Chadwick carried out a series of experiments in which beryllium was bombarded with alpha particles, producing a highly penetrating radiation. He demonstrated that this radiation consisted of electrically neutral particles of roughly the same mass as the proton, confirming the existence of the neutron that Rutherford had earlier predicted. [1] The discovery resolved long-standing questions about atomic mass and provided a new tool for probing and splitting the nucleus.

The neutron gave physicists a neutral probe that could penetrate the nucleus without being repelled by its charge, opening the door to controlled nuclear reactions.

For this achievement Chadwick received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1935, and his findings were foundational to the subsequent development of nuclear fission. [2]

Wartime work and later career

During the Second World War Chadwick played a central role in British atomic research, chairing the committee that assessed the feasibility of a nuclear weapon. He led the British mission to the American Manhattan Project, coordinating the work of British scientists with their U.S. counterparts. [4] He was knighted in 1945 in recognition of this service. After the war he served as Master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and continued to advise on scientific policy.

Legacy

Chadwick's identification of the neutron is regarded as one of the pivotal experiments of twentieth-century physics, underpinning both the study of nuclear structure and the technologies of nuclear energy and weapons. [3] Among his many honours were the Copley Medal and the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society. He died in Cambridge on 24 July 1974.
