Jack Ma (born 1964) is a Chinese entrepreneur and philanthropist best known as a co-founder of the Alibaba Group, one of the world's largest e-commerce and technology companies. [1] Rising from a modest background in Hangzhou to become one of China's wealthiest individuals, he came to symbolise the country's rapid embrace of the internet economy. [2] He stepped back from Alibaba's leadership in 2019 and has since devoted much of his attention to philanthropy and education. [1]
Early life and education
Ma was born on 10 September 1964 in Hangzhou, in China's Zhejiang province. [1] As a teenager he taught himself English by offering informal tours to foreign visitors near the city's tourist sites, a practice through which he acquired the name "Jack." [2] After failing university entrance examinations more than once, he was admitted to Hangzhou Normal University, graduating with a degree in English and going on to work as a teacher. [1] He later studied at the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. [1]
Founding of Alibaba
Ma encountered the internet during a trip to the United States in the mid-1990s and recognised its commercial potential for connecting Chinese manufacturers with global buyers. [2] In 1999 he gathered a group of associates in his apartment and founded Alibaba, a business-to-business marketplace linking small Chinese exporters with overseas customers. [1] The company expanded into consumer platforms such as Taobao and Tmall and into digital payments through Alipay, growing into one of the world's largest e-commerce enterprises. [3]
Rise and public profile
Under Ma's leadership Alibaba grew rapidly, culminating in a record-setting initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014. [3] Known for his energetic public appearances and unconventional management style, Ma became one of China's most recognisable business leaders and a symbol of the country's entrepreneurial ambitions. [2] He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour and honoured within China as a "Pioneer of Reform." [1]
Later career and philanthropy
In 2019 Ma stepped down as chairman of Alibaba, handing leadership to a successor while retaining an interest in the company's affairs. [1] He turned increasingly to philanthropic and educational work through the Jack Ma Foundation, supporting causes in rural education, entrepreneurship and environmental conservation. [2] After publicly criticising aspects of China's financial regulation in 2020, he maintained a markedly lower public profile. [3]
Legacy
Ma is widely regarded as one of the defining figures of China's internet era, credited with helping to transform the country's retail and financial landscape. [2] His career is frequently cited as an example of the opportunities and pressures facing private entrepreneurs in modern China. [3]
