Henri Poincaré (1854 - 1912) was a French mathematician, theoretical physicist, engineer, and philosopher of science, often called "the last universalist" for his command of nearly every field of mathematics of his era.[1] His work laid foundations for algebraic topology and the modern theory of dynamical systems, and anticipated key ideas of the special theory of relativity.[2]

Early life and education

Henri Poincaré was born on 29 April 1854 in Nancy, in northeastern France, into a prominent family; his cousin Raymond Poincaré would later serve as President of France. He excelled at the local lycée, since renamed the lycée Henri-Poincaré in his honour.[3] In 1873 he entered the École Polytechnique, continued his studies at the École des Mines, and completed a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Paris in 1879.

Mathematical career

After a brief period working as a mining engineer, Poincaré turned fully to research and teaching, eventually holding several chairs at the University of Paris (the Sorbonne). He was extraordinarily prolific, producing hundreds of papers across pure and applied mathematics.[1] Early in his career he introduced the theory of automorphic (Fuchsian) functions, and his memoirs on "analysis situs" effectively founded the field now known as algebraic topology.[2]

Celestial mechanics and chaos

Poincaré made lasting contributions to celestial mechanics, above all through his study of the three-body problem. In 1887 he won a prize sponsored by King Oscar II of Sweden for work on the dynamics of the solar system, and in revising his memoir he recognised that some orbits are extraordinarily sensitive to initial conditions.[3] This insight is widely regarded as an origin of modern chaos theory. He summarised the outlook in his popular writing:

It may happen that small differences in the initial conditions produce very great ones in the final phenomena.

Physics and philosophy of science

In mathematical physics Poincaré studied electromagnetism and the electron theory of Hendrik Lorentz, developing the transformation group later named the Poincaré group and contributing to ideas that Albert Einstein independently framed as special relativity in 1905.[2] He was also an influential philosopher of science, advocating a "conventionalist" view of scientific theories, and his accessible books such as Science and Hypothesis reached a wide public.[4]

Legacy

Poincaré died in Paris on 17 July 1912. His many honours included the Sylvester Medal, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Bolyai Prize, and he was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. He is perhaps best remembered for the Poincaré conjecture, a fundamental problem in topology posed in 1904 that remained open for nearly a century until it was proved by Grigori Perelman in the early 2000s.[1]
