Hebe Camargo (1929 - 2012) was a Brazilian television presenter, singer and actress whose broadcasting career lasted from the earliest years of Brazilian television until shortly before her death. [1] Widely known as the "queen of Brazilian television," she was among the first women in the country to host a programme of her own and remained a fixture of national popular culture for close to six decades. Early life and music
Hebe Maria Monteiro de Camargo was born on 8 March 1929 in Taubaté, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. [1] She began performing as a child and moved with her family to the city of São Paulo, where she and her sister Stelinha formed a singing duo that worked in radio and recorded for the record labels of the 1940s.
Her early career developed in radio, then the dominant broadcast medium in Brazil, and she recorded as a solo singer as well, building a following before television reached the country.
Television career
Brazilian television began in 1950, and Camargo entered the new medium in its first years. In 1955 she took charge of a programme of her own, becoming one of the earliest women in Brazil to front a television show and effectively introducing the talk-show format to Brazilian audiences. [2]
Over the following decades she worked for a succession of networks, including TV Paulista, TV Record, TV Bandeirantes and, from the 1980s, SBT, where Programa Hebe ran for many years and became her best-known vehicle. [3] The format combined interviews with musical performances and light conversation, and her guests ranged across Brazilian politics, sport, music and entertainment as well as visiting international performers.
Alongside presenting she appeared as an actress in films and television productions and continued to record music at intervals throughout her career.
Public standing and honours
Camargo's longevity on air made her a familiar presence across generations of Brazilian viewers, and her manner of address, at once informal and direct, became widely imitated. [1] She received the Order of the Southern Cross and the Order of Cultural Merit from the Brazilian state, and the Latin Recording Academy gave her its Trustees Award in recognition of her contribution to music and broadcasting.
Later life and death
She was treated for cancer in the late 2000s and spoke publicly about her illness, then returned to regular presenting. Camargo died in São Paulo on 29 September 2012 at the age of eighty-three. [1]
Her death was marked by extensive national coverage and public tributes, and her name was given to public spaces and cultural institutions in São Paulo. She is generally regarded as one of the defining figures in the history of television in Brazil. [2]
