Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 - 1716) was a German polymath and one of the most influential thinkers of the early modern period, active as a mathematician, philosopher, jurist, and diplomat. He is best known for developing the infinitesimal calculus independently of Isaac Newton, and for introducing the elegant notation for derivatives and integrals still in use today.[1] He also formulated the binary number system that would later become foundational to digital computing.

Early life and education

Leibniz was born on 21 June 1646 in Leipzig, in the Electorate of Saxony. The son of a professor of moral philosophy, he had access to his father's library from an early age and taught himself Latin as a child. He enrolled at Leipzig University and later studied at the University of Altdorf, where he earned a doctorate in law, having also spent time associated with the University of Jena.[2]

Mathematics

Leibniz made lasting contributions to mathematics, most famously the development of the calculus in the 1670s. Working independently of Isaac Newton, he arrived at the fundamental concepts of differentiation and integration and devised a systematic notation, including the integral sign and the d for differentials, that proved so practical it remains standard.[1] A protracted and bitter priority dispute with Newton's supporters overshadowed much of his later life, though historians now recognise the two men as independent discoverers.

He also described the binary numeral system, representing all numbers with only the digits 0 and 1, and designed a mechanical calculating machine, the Stepped Reckoner, capable of performing multiplication and division.[3]

Philosophy

As a philosopher, Leibniz is a central figure of 17th-century rationalism. His metaphysics centres on the theory of monads, indivisible and immaterial units that constitute reality, set out in works such as the Monadology. In his Theodicy he defended the view that the actual world is the best of all possible worlds, a position later satirised by Voltaire.[2]

Leibniz argued that God, in creating the universe, chose from among infinitely many possibilities the world containing the greatest possible perfection.

Career and public life

Leibniz spent much of his career in the service of the House of Hanover, working as a librarian, historian, and privy counsellor. He travelled widely across Europe, corresponded with hundreds of scholars, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was instrumental in founding the Berlin Academy of Sciences and served as its first president.[4]

Legacy

Leibniz died in Hanover on 14 November 1716. His breadth of achievement across mathematics, logic, philosophy, law, and science has led many to regard him as a founder of modern logic and a forerunner of information theory. The calculus notation he introduced and the binary system he described remain fundamental to mathematics and computing.[3]
