Erwin Schrödinger (1887 - 1961) was an Austrian theoretical physicist who developed the wave-mechanical formulation of quantum theory. His 1926 wave equation, now known as the Schrödinger equation, became one of the central mathematical tools of modern physics, and he shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions. [1]
Early life and education
Erwin Schrödinger was born on 12 August 1887 in Vienna, then part of Austria-Hungary. He was educated at the Akademisches Gymnasium and went on to study physics at the University of Vienna, where he was influenced by the work of Ludwig Boltzmann and trained under Franz Exner and Friedrich Hasenöhrl. [2] He completed his doctorate in 1910 and, after service in the First World War, held academic posts in Vienna, Jena, Stuttgart, and Breslau before taking a professorship in Zurich.
Wave mechanics
In a remarkable series of papers published in 1926, Schrödinger introduced wave mechanics, describing quantum systems in terms of a continuous wave function governed by a differential equation. This approach was soon shown to be mathematically equivalent to the matrix mechanics developed independently by Werner Heisenberg. The Schrödinger equation provided a practical and intuitive framework for calculating the behaviour of atoms and molecules, and it remains fundamental to physics and chemistry. [1] For this work he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933, jointly with Paul Dirac.
Later career and the cat paradox
In 1927 Schrödinger succeeded Max Planck at the University of Berlin, but he left Germany in 1933 in opposition to the Nazi regime. After periods in Oxford and elsewhere, he eventually settled in Ireland, where he helped establish and lead the School of Theoretical Physics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. In 1935 he proposed the thought experiment known as Schrödinger's cat, which vividly illustrated the puzzles of quantum superposition and measurement. [3]
Legacy
Beyond physics, Schrödinger wrote widely on philosophy and the foundations of science. His 1944 book What Is Life? explored the physical basis of heredity and influenced a generation of molecular biologists. [4] He returned to Vienna in 1956 and died there on 4 January 1961. His name endures in the Schrödinger equation, the Schrödinger's cat paradox, and numerous honours and institutions named after him.
