Ernest Rutherford (1871 - 1937) was a New Zealand-born physicist and chemist who is widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics. Working in Canada and Britain, he transformed the understanding of matter by identifying the atomic nucleus and demonstrating that atoms could be transformed from one element into another. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances. [2]

Early life and education

Ernest Rutherford was born on 30 August 1871 near Nelson, New Zealand, into a large farming family. He was educated at Nelson College and then at the University of Canterbury, where he showed an early talent for experimental science. In 1895 a scholarship took him to the University of Cambridge, where he worked as a research student under J. J. Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory. [1]

Radioactivity and early research

In 1898 Rutherford was appointed professor of physics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. There he distinguished between two distinct types of radiation, which he named alpha and beta rays, and, with the chemist Frederick Soddy, formulated the theory that radioactivity results from the spontaneous transformation of atoms of one element into another. This work introduced the concept of the radioactive half-life and earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. [2]

The atomic nucleus

Rutherford moved to the University of Manchester in 1907. There he directed the celebrated gold foil experiments carried out with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, in which alpha particles were fired at thin metal foil. The unexpected scattering of some particles through large angles led Rutherford in 1911 to propose a new model of the atom, with almost all of its mass and positive charge concentrated in a tiny central nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. The observation was as if a shell fired at tissue paper had bounced straight back, a result Rutherford described as the most incredible event of his life.

In 1917 he achieved the first deliberate transmutation of one element into another, converting nitrogen into oxygen by bombarding it with alpha particles, an experiment often summarized as splitting the atom. He is also credited with naming the proton.

Cambridge and legacy

In 1919 Rutherford succeeded Thomson as Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge, where he led a generation of physicists whose work opened the nuclear age. He was knighted in 1914, appointed to the Order of Merit in 1925, and raised to the peerage as Baron Rutherford of Nelson in 1931. Among his many honours were the Copley Medal and the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society. [1]

Rutherford died in Cambridge on 19 October 1937 and was buried in Westminster Abbey near Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. The element rutherfordium is named after him, and he remains one of the most influential experimental physicists in history. [4]
