Claude Elwood Shannon (1916 - 2001) was an American mathematician, electrical engineer, and cryptographer widely regarded as the "father of information theory." [1] His 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" established the mathematical framework underlying modern digital communication and data compression, and introduced the "bit" as the fundamental unit of information. Early life and education
Claude Shannon was born on April 30, 1916, in Petoskey, Michigan, and grew up in nearby Gaylord. He showed an early aptitude for mechanical and electrical devices, and after graduating from Gaylord High School he enrolled at the University of Michigan, earning bachelor's degrees in both mathematics and electrical engineering in 1936. He then continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. [1]
Boolean algebra and switching circuits
At MIT, Shannon worked on Vannevar Bush's differential analyzer, an early analog computer. His 1937 master's thesis, "A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits," demonstrated that the operations of electrical switching circuits could be described using Boolean algebra. [1] This insight allowed logical design problems to be reduced to systematic algebraic methods, and it became a cornerstone of digital circuit design. He received his doctorate from MIT in 1940.
A Mathematical Theory of Communication
After joining Bell Telephone Laboratories, Shannon carried out research in cryptography during the Second World War and developed the ideas that would define his career. In 1948 he published "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" in the Bell System Technical Journal, founding the discipline of information theory. [2] The work introduced the bit as a measure of information, defined channel capacity, and established the limits of reliable communication in the presence of noise.
These results provided the theoretical basis for data compression and error-correcting codes, technologies that underpin telephony, storage, and the internet. [3]
Later work and legacy
Shannon combined deep theoretical insight with a lifelong love of gadgets and puzzles, building devices such as a chess-playing program and a maze-solving mechanical mouse. He later returned to MIT as a professor. Over his career he received numerous honors, including the National Medal of Science, the IEEE Medal of Honor, the Marconi Prize, and the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences. He is remembered as one of the principal architects of the information age, whose ideas remain central to communication and computing.
