Charles Babbage (1791 - 1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable digital computer. [1] Frustrated by the errors in the mathematical tables of his day, he devoted much of his life to designing machines that could calculate and print results automatically, work that later earned him recognition as a founding figure of computing.

Early life and education

Charles Babbage was born on 26 December 1791 in the Walworth area of London. [1] He studied at Trinity College and later Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he found the standard mathematics teaching outdated and helped found the Analytical Society to promote modern continental methods. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816 and, in 1820, was among the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society, which awarded him its Gold Medal in 1824. [2]

The Difference Engine

Babbage's first major project was the Difference Engine, a mechanical calculator designed to compute and tabulate polynomial functions using the method of finite differences. [2] Its purpose was to eliminate the human errors that plagued printed mathematical, astronomical, and navigational tables. Although he secured government funding, the full machine was never completed in his lifetime, in part because of the demanding precision required of contemporary manufacturing.

The Analytical Engine

Beginning around 1837, Babbage conceived a far more ambitious device, the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose programmable computer. [3] It anticipated features of modern computers, including a separation between a processing unit he called the "mill" and a memory he called the "store," the use of punched cards inspired by the Jacquard loom, and conditional branching and loops. The mathematician Ada Lovelace, who translated and annotated a description of the engine, wrote a sequence of operations for it that is often regarded as one of the first computer programs.

The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves.

Other contributions

Babbage held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1828 to 1839. [1] His 1832 book On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures analysed industrial production and division of labour, influencing early economics and operations research. He also worked on cryptography, reliability, and practical inventions, and he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Legacy

Babbage died in London on 18 October 1871. [1] Because his designs contained the essential logical structure of the modern computer, he is frequently called a "father of the computer." In the twentieth century, the Science Museum in London constructed a working Difference Engine from his surviving plans, demonstrating that his mechanical designs were fundamentally sound. [3]
