Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer, and Christian philosopher whose contributions reshaped several fields during the Scientific Revolution. A child prodigy educated by his father, he made lasting advances in mathematics and the physical sciences before turning increasingly to theology and philosophy in his later years [1].
Early life
Pascal was born on 19 June 1623 in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region of France. His mother died when he was young, and his father, Etienne Pascal, a tax official with a strong interest in science and mathematics, took charge of his education. The family moved to Paris in 1631, where the precocious Blaise was introduced to leading intellectual circles [2].
Displaying exceptional early talent, Pascal reportedly worked out significant geometric results as a teenager. At the age of sixteen he composed an essay on conic sections that impressed contemporary mathematicians and contained a theorem still known today as Pascal's theorem.
Mathematics and invention
To ease his father's tax calculations, Pascal designed and built a mechanical calculating machine, later called the Pascaline, one of the earliest digital calculators. His correspondence with Pierre de Fermat on problems of gambling laid the foundations of the modern mathematical theory of probability [1]. He also studied the arithmetical triangle of binomial coefficients, now widely known as Pascal's triangle.
Physics
Pascal carried out influential experiments on atmospheric pressure and the vacuum, building on the work of Evangelista Torricelli. His investigations into the equilibrium of fluids led to the principle that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted undiminished throughout it, a result known as Pascal's law and fundamental to hydraulics [3]. Philosophy and religion
Following a profound religious experience in 1654, Pascal became closely associated with the Jansenist community at Port-Royal and devoted much of his energy to religious writing. His Lettres provinciales defended Jansenism and are celebrated as masterpieces of French prose [2]. His unfinished apology for the Christian faith, published posthumously as the Pensees, includes the famous argument now called Pascal's wager.
Legacy
