Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970) was a British philosopher, mathematician, logician and public intellectual, and one of the founders of analytic philosophy. [1] With Alfred North Whitehead he wrote Principia Mathematica, an attempt to derive mathematics from logical axioms, and over a long public career he wrote extensively on education, religion, ethics and politics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. [2]

Early life and education

Russell was born on 18 May 1872 at Trellech in Monmouthshire, Wales, into an aristocratic Whig family; his grandfather, Lord John Russell, had twice been Prime Minister. Orphaned before the age of four, he was raised by his grandmother in a strict Presbyterian household and educated privately. [1]

In 1890 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics and then moral sciences. He was elected a fellow of Trinity and remained associated with Cambridge, intermittently, for much of his life. [3]

Logic and mathematics

Russell's early work sought secure logical foundations for mathematics. In 1901 he identified the paradox that bears his name, concerning the set of all sets that are not members of themselves, which exposed a contradiction in the naive set theory then current and forced a reconstruction of the subject. [3]

His response was the theory of types, developed at length in Principia Mathematica, written with Alfred North Whitehead and published in three volumes between 1910 and 1913. The work attempted to show that mathematical truth could be reduced to logical truth. Although Kurt Gödel's incompleteness results later demonstrated that the programme could not succeed in the form envisaged, Principia transformed formal logic and remains a foundational text. [1]

Philosophy

Russell also shaped philosophy more broadly. His 1905 paper "On Denoting" analysed definite descriptions and became a model for the analytic method of clarifying philosophical problems through logical analysis of language. He developed logical atomism, argued for a version of empiricism informed by science, and wrote accessible surveys including The Problems of Philosophy and A History of Western Philosophy. [1] He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and received the De Morgan Medal and the Sylvester Medal for his mathematical work.

Politics and public life

Russell was a lifelong campaigner on public questions. His opposition to the First World War cost him his Trinity fellowship and led to a six-month imprisonment in 1918. [2] He wrote critically of both Soviet communism and unrestrained capitalism, advocated reform in education and sexual morality, and in 1940 a court ruling blocked his appointment at the City College of New York on the grounds of his published views.

In later life he became a leading figure in nuclear disarmament. With Albert Einstein he issued the Russell-Einstein Manifesto in 1955 warning of the dangers of nuclear weapons, helped found the Pugwash Conferences, and was briefly jailed again in 1961 following a protest. [4]

Later years and legacy

Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought." [2] He died on 2 February 1970 at Plas Penrhyn in Wales, aged 97. His logical work underpins modern philosophy of language, computer science and formal semantics, while his essays remain widely read for their clarity and their defence of free inquiry.
