Avicenna (c. 980 - 1037), known in Persian as Ibn Sina, was a polymath of the Islamic Golden Age whose writings on medicine and philosophy became foundational across the medieval world.[1] Widely regarded as one of the most influential physicians and thinkers in history, he authored hundreds of works, most notably The Canon of Medicine and The Book of Healing.[2]
Early life
Avicenna was born around 980 in Afshona, near Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan. Reputed to have been a child prodigy, he is said to have memorized the Quran and mastered much of the learning of his day while still a youth.[3] Largely self-taught in medicine, he began practicing as a physician in his teens and later served as court physician and administrator to a succession of rulers across Persia and Central Asia.
Medicine
His five-volume al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) organized Greek, Arabic, and Persian medical knowledge into a single systematic reference. Translated into Latin in the twelfth century, it remained a standard textbook in European and Islamic universities for more than six hundred years.[1] The work addressed the transmissible nature of certain diseases, discussed the use of quarantine, and set out detailed accounts of pharmacology, anatomy, and clinical practice.
Philosophy
Avicenna's Kitab al-Shifa (The Book of Healing) was a vast encyclopedia spanning logic, metaphysics, mathematics, and natural science. Building on Aristotle and the Neoplatonic tradition, he advanced influential arguments on the distinction between essence and existence and a demonstration for a necessary being.[4] His metaphysics profoundly shaped later Islamic thought and, through Latin translations, reached Western scholastics such as Thomas Aquinas.
Legacy
Avicenna died in 1037 in Hamadan, in western Iran, where his mausoleum stands today. His synthesis of medicine and philosophy earned him honorifics such as al-Shaykh al-Ra'is ("the Master") and, in the Latin West, the title "Prince of Physicians."[2] His influence endured through the Renaissance, and his name survives in scholarly institutions, awards, and a lunar crater named in his honor.
