Anaximander (c. 610 - c. 546 BCE) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, astronomer, and geographer from Miletus, and a leading figure of the Milesian school who sought rational, natural explanations for the origin and structure of the cosmos. [1]
Life and background
Anaximander lived in Miletus, a prosperous Greek city on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, during the sixth century BCE. Ancient sources describe him as a younger associate, pupil, or successor of Thales, with whom he is grouped among the founders of the Milesian school of natural philosophy. [1] Little about his life is known with certainty; the traditional dates derive from the chronographer Apollodorus, who reported that Anaximander was sixty-four years old around 547/546 BCE and died soon afterward. The apeiron
Anaximander is best known for proposing that the source and first principle of all things is the apeiron, usually translated as the "boundless," "unlimited," or "indefinite." Rather than identifying a familiar substance such as water as the origin of everything, he argued that the underlying principle must itself be limitless and undefined so that it could give rise to the endless variety of the world. [1] From this boundless source, he held, the opposites separate out to form the ordered cosmos.
Cosmology and astronomy
Anaximander advanced one of the earliest mechanical models of the universe. He is credited with picturing the Earth as a free-floating body at the center of the cosmos, held in place not by any support but by its equal distance from everything around it, a striking break from earlier accounts that rested the Earth on water or foundations. [2] He is also reported to have described the heavenly bodies as rings or wheels of fire and to have speculated about the origins of living things, suggesting that life arose from moisture and that humans developed from other creatures. Geography and the world map
Anaximander is traditionally said to have produced one of the first maps of the known world and to have introduced the gnomon, a vertical sundial marker, to Greece for tracking the solstices, equinoxes, and hours of the day. [3] These efforts reflect a broader ambition to represent the natural world in a systematic and measurable way.
Legacy
Anaximander is often regarded as the author of the first prose treatise in the Western tradition, conventionally titled On Nature, of which only a small fragment survives through the quotations of later writers. [4] His insistence on explaining the cosmos through natural principles rather than myth, together with his bold conception of the boundless, exerted a lasting influence and secured his place as a foundational figure in the history of science and philosophy.
