Steven Anthony Ballmer (b. 1956) is an American businessman and investor who served as the chief executive officer of Microsoft from 2000 to 2014. Early life and education
Ballmer was born on March 24, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in the suburb of Farmington Hills. [1] He attended the Detroit Country Day School before enrolling at Harvard College, where he studied mathematics and economics and befriended fellow student Bill Gates. [1] After graduating, he briefly worked in marketing before entering the Stanford Graduate School of Business, which he left in 1980 to join Microsoft.
Career at Microsoft
Ballmer joined Microsoft in 1980 as the company's 30th employee and its first business manager, recruited personally by Gates. [1] Over the following two decades he led several divisions, including operations, operating systems development, and sales and support. He became president of the company in 1998 and succeeded Gates as chief executive officer in January 2000. [2]
During Ballmer's tenure as CEO, Microsoft's annual revenue rose substantially, driven by products such as Windows, the Office suite, server software, and the Xbox video game console.
