Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857 - 1894) was a German physicist who became the first to conclusively prove the existence of electromagnetic waves, experimentally confirming the theory of electromagnetism developed by James Clerk Maxwell. [1] His demonstration that radio waves could be generated, transmitted, and detected in the laboratory laid the foundation for radio, television, and radar. The SI unit of frequency, the hertz (Hz), is named in his honour.
Early life and education
Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was born on 22 February 1857 in Hamburg into a prosperous and cultured family. [1] He attended the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums in Hamburg before pursuing scientific and engineering studies. He studied at the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and later moved to Berlin, where he worked under the leading physicists Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff at the Frederick William University. Scientific career
After completing his doctorate in Berlin, Hertz held academic posts that included a professorship at the University of Karlsruhe and, from 1889, a chair at the University of Bonn. [2] It was at Karlsruhe, between 1886 and 1889, that he carried out the experiments for which he is best remembered.
Using a spark-gap transmitter and a simple loop receiver, Hertz generated oscillating electric currents and showed that the resulting disturbances propagated through space as waves. He measured their velocity and demonstrated that they could be reflected, refracted, and polarised much like light, confirming that they were of the same electromagnetic nature. This provided the first experimental verification of James Clerk Maxwell's prediction that light and electromagnetic radiation are the same phenomenon. [1]
Major discoveries
In the course of his research Hertz also observed the photoelectric effect, noting that ultraviolet light striking a metal surface influenced the electric sparks it produced. [3] Although he did not explain the effect, his careful observations opened a line of inquiry later resolved by Albert Einstein's quantum interpretation. Hertz's honours during his lifetime included the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society, the Matteucci Medal, and the La Caze Prize of the French Academy of Sciences.
Death and legacy
Hertz's career was cut short by illness. He died on 1 January 1894 in Bonn at the age of 36. [1] Despite his brief life, his experimental confirmation of electromagnetic waves proved foundational: it directly enabled the development of wireless telegraphy and radio by inventors such as Guglielmo Marconi. In 1930 the International Electrotechnical Commission adopted the hertz as the unit of frequency, and his name remains among the most frequently spoken in modern technology.
