Charles-Augustin de Coulomb (1736 - 1806) was a French physicist and military engineer best known for formulating Coulomb's law, which quantifies the electrostatic force between two charged particles. Early life and education

Charles-Augustin de Coulomb was born on 14 June 1736 in Angoulême, France. [1] He studied at the Collège des Quatre-Nations in Paris and later trained at the École royale du génie de Mézières, one of the leading engineering schools of the era, where he received a rigorous grounding in mathematics and applied science. Military engineering career

After completing his studies, Coulomb entered the French army as a military engineer. He served for many years on public works and fortification projects, including an extended posting in the Caribbean, where he supervised construction and gained practical experience in structural mechanics. Scientific work

Coulomb is remembered above all for his precise experiments on electricity and magnetism. Using a torsion balance capable of measuring extremely small forces, he demonstrated that the force between two electric charges is proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, a relationship now known as Coulomb's law.
