Alfred North Whitehead (1861 - 1947) was an English mathematician and philosopher best known for co-authoring Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell and for founding the metaphysical school known as process philosophy. [1] A wide-ranging thinker whose career spanned mathematics, logic, physics and metaphysics, he moved from formal foundations of mathematics toward a comprehensive philosophy of nature and experience in his later years. Early life and education
Whitehead was born on 15 February 1861 in Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was educated at Sherborne School before entering Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. [3] He remained at Cambridge as a fellow and lecturer, establishing himself as a rigorous mathematician and logician.
Mathematics and Principia Mathematica
Whitehead's early work centred on algebra, logic and the foundations of mathematics. Between 1910 and 1913 he collaborated with his former student Bertrand Russell to produce the three-volume Principia Mathematica, an ambitious attempt to derive mathematics from a small set of logical axioms. [1] The work became one of the most influential texts in modern logic and helped shape twentieth-century analytic philosophy and the development of mathematical logic. [4]
Philosophy of science and metaphysics
After leaving Cambridge, Whitehead taught in London, including at Imperial College, where he turned increasingly to the philosophy of science and the nature of physical reality. In 1924 he accepted a professorship at Harvard University in the United States, beginning the most productive philosophical phase of his career. [2] Works such as Science and the Modern World (1925) and Process and Reality (1929), the latter based on his Gifford Lectures, set out his "philosophy of organism," which treats reality as composed of interrelated processes and events rather than static substances. Honours
Whitehead was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1903 and received the society's Sylvester Medal for his contributions to mathematics. [3] In recognition of his broader intellectual achievements he was appointed to the Order of Merit, one of Britain's most distinguished honours. He also held honorary doctorates from institutions including Harvard University and the University of St Andrews.
Legacy
Whitehead died on 30 December 1947 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His influence extends across logic, the philosophy of science, education and theology, and his process philosophy gave rise to an ongoing tradition of process thought and process theology. [2] He is remembered as a thinker who bridged the rigour of mathematics with the ambition of speculative metaphysics.
